Portugal Wildfires

A forest fire that broke out the night of July 1, 2026 in the municipality of Vouzela, in Portugal's northern Viseu district, has since spread into the neighboring municipalities of Oliveira de Frades, Águeda, and Tondela, prompting precautionary evacuations of two villages and the removal of isolated and vulnerable residents from their homes. The blaze has injured at least nine people, including two seriously, among them firefighters and a civilian who attempted to fight the flames independently, and has destroyed agricultural outbuildings and damaged homes.

The fire is part of a broader wave of wildfires burning simultaneously across Portugal, Spain, and Greece amid a prolonged heatwave. More than 14,000 hectares have burned nationwide in 2026 to date, the worst toll since 2017 and roughly double the destruction recorded over the same period in 2025. Portugal has activated the European Union's civil protection mechanism to request additional firefighting resources. More than 15,000 personnel, organized into roughly 2,600 teams, are deployed nationally, backed by over 3,400 ground vehicles and about 80 aircraft. Rail services in affected districts have been suspended and heat warnings remain in effect across much of the country.

Portuguese Red Cross teams and IFRC partners are supporting evacuated and displaced residents with emergency shelter, while international relief organizations are mobilizing supplies for firefighters and affected families as the fires continue to burn.
