A landslide in Chongqing has killed at least eight people and left 34 missing after tons of rock and soil swept down a steep cliffside into a residential neighborhood in Pengshui County on the morning of July 17, 2026, burying more than 10 buildings.
A Sudden Collapse
The slope failure struck at around 9:08 a.m. local time, sending debris crashing into homes below with little warning. Rescue teams pulled ten people alive from the wreckage, including two with serious injuries, while more than 1,100 residents were evacuated from the surrounding area as a precaution against further collapse. Geological surveys since the disaster have identified additional unstable rock masses along the cliff face, and experts have warned that continued heavy rainfall or prolonged hot weather could trigger renewed slides.
Rescue Operation Underway
More than 800 rescue personnel have deployed to the site with life-detection equipment, search dogs, drones, and heavy machinery to comb through the debris field for the 34 people still unaccounted for. China's Ministry of Emergency Management dispatched a coordination team to the scene, and President Xi Jinping has called for a scientific, orderly search-and-rescue effort as operations continue.
Relief Organizations Responding
The Red Cross network is coordinating with Chinese Red Cross chapters to support emergency relief for displaced residents. Direct Relief is monitoring the response to identify medical and humanitarian supply needs for survivors and evacuees. As with previous disasters in China this year, aid groups are focused on shelter, medical care, and support for families still awaiting word on missing loved ones.
