Habitat for Humanity has announced a major new initiative to integrate climate-resilient design principles into every home it builds as part of disaster recovery operations. The program aims to address the growing pattern of repeated destruction and rebuilding in disaster-prone communities.
Building Back Stronger
The initiative includes elevated foundations in flood-prone areas, hurricane strapping and impact-resistant materials in coastal regions, and fire-resistant construction in wildfire-prone zones. Each home will be designed to meet or exceed local building codes for natural hazard resistance.
Informed by Experience
The program draws on Habitat's experience rebuilding after a series of major disasters — from the 2023 Maui wildfires to the 2024 Texas Panhandle fires to Hurricane Helene. In each case, the organization observed that many destroyed structures had been built or rebuilt without adequate protection against foreseeable hazards.
Cost and Impact
While climate-resilient features add approximately 5-15 percent to construction costs, Habitat estimates that the investment saves far more in avoided future losses. Homes built to resilient standards are expected to withstand the types of events that would destroy conventional construction, protecting both families and the broader recovery investment.
