Two storms dominated the week: Typhoon Champi brushed Guam and Storm Adam flooded Spain's Mediterranean coast. Meanwhile the DRC Ebola outbreak kept growing. Disaster Relief Organizations also caught up on a gap in its coverage: 24 disasters from late June to mid-October are now in the directory, and every disaster in recovery was reviewed against whether its listed responders are still at work.

New This Week

Typhoon Champi. The Category 4 typhoon passed about 10 miles south of Guam (United States) on October 18, leaving about half of the island's power feeders offline and shutting the Ugum water treatment plant. No deaths were reported, and the Guam Power Authority had about 70% of feeders back by October 19. A presidential emergency declaration authorized FEMA support, and World Central Kitchen is serving hot meals in Guam's shelters. Champi has since re-intensified to super typhoon strength.

Storm Adam. Spain's first high-impact cut-off low of the season dropped up to 600–700 mm of rain in 24 hours on the Valencia and Alicante coast from October 17, killing at least four people. As of October 20, the Guardia Civil had carried out 496 rescues and 2,141 evacuations, and classes were suspended for more than 100,000 pupils in Valencia and about 160,000 in the Balearic Islands. World Central Kitchen is serving meals in Valencia, Alicante, and Els Poblets (Spain).

Recovery from the October 9–11 storms and earthquake.

Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin, Florida, as a Category 2 on October 9. It killed nine people and cut power to about 900,000 customers. The American Red Cross opened shelters, The Salvation Army deployed canteens along the Gulf Coast, and Samaritan's Purse and Operation Blessing are helping with cleanup and meals.
The Panama earthquake, a magnitude 7.7 on October 9, damaged nearly 8,000 homes on the Azuero Peninsula and beyond in Panama.
In Mexico, Hurricanes Rachel and Simon left at least six people dead and five missing, most of them in Ensenada's flash floods.

Ongoing Emergencies

Ebola in the DRC. As of October 18, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control reported 9,552 confirmed cases and 4,602 deaths across eight provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. That makes it the largest Ebola outbreak in the country's history. Weekly case counts were still rising in WHO's latest update, and there is no licensed vaccine or treatment for the Bundibugyo strain. International Medical Corps, Direct Relief, and the Red Cross Movement are among the responders.

Iran and Lebanon.

The war on Iran is back on our active list. A June ceasefire collapsed in July, a U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports continues, and a vessel was sunk in the Strait of Hormuz on October 13.
In the Lebanon War, Israeli strikes have continued despite the June truce. Lebanon's Health Ministry counted 4,387 people killed since March 2, as of October 11, and U.S.-mediated military-technical talks began in Tampa on October 20.

Ethiopia and Yemen.

In the Northern Ethiopia War, federal forces retook Mekelle on October 4. Prime Minister Abiy announced an interim government for Tigray on October 16, and UN operations in the north have been on hold.
In Yemen, the UN says more than 250,000 people have been displaced and access to Taiz is essentially blocked. International Medical Corps, Prosper Global (formerly Mercy Corps), and CARE are responding.

Thailand. The Thailand floods had killed 71 people as of October 12. Twenty-one provinces, including Bangkok, were still under water.

Moving to Recovery

The Venezuela Earthquakes remain in recovery. The official toll stands at 6,509, and thousands of people are still in shelters.
The Mayon Volcano Eruption moved to recovery after its alert level was lowered in August.
Sixteen floods, wildfires, storms, and earthquakes from June and July also moved to recovery, among them the Central Texas Flash Floods and the Bangladesh Floods.
Twenty-two earlier 2026 disasters whose listed organizations are no longer reporting active work were marked resolved, such as the Dominican Republic Floods and the April Midwest tornado outbreak.
Long-running recoveries like Hurricane Helene and the Mozambique Floods stay open while responders are still working there.
