Overview
Cyclone Freddy lasted five weeks, making it the longest-lasting tropical cyclone ever recorded in history. When it finally made landfall in Malawi in March 2023, it brought catastrophic flooding that devastated southern regions of the country. Over 1,000 people were killed and hundreds of thousands displaced. The cyclone destroyed homes, schools, hospitals, and critical infrastructure across some of Malawi's poorest communities. Agricultural land was submerged, threatening food security for months. International organizations mounted a major relief effort, providing emergency shelter, clean water, medical care, and food supplies to affected populations.
