Overview
On February 6, 2023, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Southern Turkey in the early morning hours, followed by a 7.5 magnitude aftershock just hours later. The twin earthquakes killed over 56,000 people across Turkey and neighboring Syria, displaced 3 million, and destroyed or damaged over 300,000 buildings. Entire city blocks pancaked in cities like Antakya, Kahramanmaraş, and Gaziantep. The disaster triggered the largest international relief operation in years, with organizations from around the world deploying search and rescue teams, field hospitals, emergency shelter, and food distribution. GEM's MENA team deployed immediately, while World Central Kitchen served millions of meals in the aftermath.
