Tropical Storm Jangmi

Initially classified as a typhoon as it formed over the western Pacific, Jangmi weakened into a severe tropical storm before making landfall over Okinawa in early June 2026, then tracking northward to strike Kyushu and make a second landfall over Wakayama Prefecture on June 3. The storm brought heavy rainfall, strong winds, and flooding across a wide swath of Japan. The Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported at least 23 people injured nationwide and 57 houses damaged. More than 60,000 households across Okinawa and Kagoshima prefectures lost power, and flooding was reported in Kanagawa Prefecture and the Greater Tokyo Area with floodwaters reaching 30 cm in some locations. Authorities issued evacuation advisories covering more than 400,000 residents, including Miyazaki City's entire population of approximately 390,000. Jangmi triggered Japan's first Level 5 Special Flood Warning under the country's new five-level disaster alert system. Nearly 900 domestic and international flights were cancelled, and several Shinkansen bullet train lines suspended services across western and central Japan. The Japanese Red Cross Society dispatched emergency relief teams to assist displaced residents and provided emergency supplies to evacuation centers across affected prefectures.
