Overview
Beginning March 26, 2026, unusually heavy spring rains triggered flash floods and landslides across more than 20 provinces in Afghanistan, including eastern, western, northern, and central regions. By April 7, the death toll had risen to at least 110, with more than 160 people injured. Over 793 homes were completely destroyed, 2,673 more damaged, and 337 kilometers of roads washed out, cutting off vulnerable communities. More than 5,800 families have been affected. On April 4, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Badakhshan province near Kabul, killing at least 8 members of a refugee family and compounding the crisis. Aid groups warned that the humanitarian situation could deteriorate further as new weather systems approached. India dispatched a humanitarian consignment via cargo flights on April 5 including kitchen sets, hygiene kits, sleeping bags, tarpaulins, and plastic sheets. Access remains severely limited due to damaged infrastructure and ongoing security concerns.
