Overview

On September 24, 2022, Category 4 Hurricane Ian made landfall along the southwest coast of Florida, causing catastrophic damage that left thousands of survivors devastated. The storm brought extreme storm surge of up to 18 feet to barrier islands and coastal communities near Fort Myers, completely destroying neighborhoods on Sanibel Island, Fort Myers Beach, and Pine Island. Over 150 people lost their lives, and the storm caused an estimated $110 billion in damage, making it one of the costliest natural disasters in US history. GEM BStrong, in partnership with Dade County, deployed teams and loaded trucks of supplies for the affected areas. World Central Kitchen served millions of meals in the aftermath.
