Overview
Beginning June 14, 2022, monsoon rains triggered the most severe flooding in Pakistan's recent history. Over one-third of the country was submerged, affecting all four provinces. Tens of millions of residents were displaced from their homes, with hundreds of thousands placed in emergency camps. The flooding destroyed over 2 million homes, 13,000 kilometers of roads, and 440 bridges. Over 1,700 people lost their lives. The agricultural devastation was catastrophic, with millions of acres of cropland destroyed, threatening food security for years. The disaster was widely attributed to climate change, as Pakistan contributes less than 1% of global emissions yet suffered disproportionate impacts.
