Overview

Hurricane Ida made landfall on August 29, 2021, near Port Fourchon, Louisiana as a Category 4 hurricane with 150 mph winds — exactly 16 years after Hurricane Katrina. The storm caused catastrophic damage across southeast Louisiana, destroying homes and infrastructure, knocking out the entire New Orleans power grid, and leaving over 1 million customers without electricity for weeks. As Ida's remnants moved northeast, they produced historic rainfall and flash flooding from Pennsylvania to New York, killing dozens in basement apartments and flooding subway systems. In total, more than 90 people were killed across multiple states. Damage estimates exceeded $75 billion, making it one of the costliest US natural disasters on record.
