Overview
On October 25, 2023, Hurricane Otis made landfall near Acapulco, Mexico as a Category 5 hurricane after undergoing one of the most rapid intensification events ever recorded — going from a tropical storm to Category 5 in just 12 hours. The storm devastated the resort city with winds exceeding 165 mph, causing catastrophic flooding, extreme structural damage, and road destruction. Over 2 million people were affected, with the city's infrastructure almost completely destroyed. The rapid intensification left little time for evacuation, contributing to significant casualties. World Central Kitchen and other organizations deployed immediately to provide meals and emergency supplies to the devastated population.
