Overview
The Smokehouse Creek Wildfire erupted in the Texas Panhandle in late February 2024, quickly becoming the second-largest fire in Texas history. Multiple major fires burned hundreds of thousands of acres of ranchland and grassland, prompting evacuation orders in several counties. The fires destroyed homes, killed livestock, and devastated the agricultural economy of the region. Strong winds and extremely dry conditions made containment efforts extraordinarily difficult. GEM deployed pallets of disaster relief supplies throughout the affected regions, while other organizations provided emergency shelter, animal rescue, and financial assistance to ranching families who lost their livelihoods.
