Overview
In April and May 2024, the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul experienced catastrophic flooding that submerged entire cities and towns. Over 1 million homes were left without access to clean water, tens of thousands of people were evacuated and placed in emergency shelters, and countless more were affected by the rising waters. The flooding was caused by unprecedented rainfall that overwhelmed river systems across the state. Porto Alegre's international airport was completely flooded and closed for months. GEM's Latin America team deployed to provide humanitarian aid, while World Central Kitchen served hundreds of thousands of meals to displaced families.
