Overview
In February 2024, Chile experienced its worst disaster in over a decade when severe forest fires devastated the Valparaíso region. The fires burned nearly 64,000 acres, destroying entire neighborhoods in the hillside communities surrounding Valparaíso and Viña del Mar. Over 130 people lost their lives, making it one of the deadliest wildfire events in South American history. Thousands of residents were forced to evacuate as flames raced through densely populated areas. The fires exposed the vulnerability of informal settlements built on steep terrain with limited fire protection. International relief organizations deployed to provide emergency shelter, medical care, and rebuilding assistance.
