Three weeks after a late-season deluge swept northern India, Uttar Pradesh is counting the cost. The Uttar Pradesh floods killed 81 people, according to a situation report released late on September 27 by the state Relief Commissioner's office, which also recorded more than 2,200 houses damaged, 154 animals killed and 81 hectares of farmland damaged.
The rain came from deep depression BOB 06, a weather system over the Bay of Bengal that brought several days of very heavy rain from September 25 to 28. On September 27, all but one of Uttar Pradesh's 75 districts recorded "large excess" rainfall. Schools were closed in parts of the state on September 28, including in the capital, Lucknow, and rescue teams moved people from flooded areas to safer locations. The Associated Press reported 46 people injured.
The same weather also hit eastern India, where officials in Odisha evacuated more than 75,000 people to safer areas. Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state with more than 240 million people, is frequently hit by heavy rain and thunderstorms during the June-to-September monsoon, and India's weather office has warned of more extreme weather.
