Overview
Between September 25 and 28, 2026, deep depression BOB 06 over the Bay of Bengal brought several days of very heavy rain to northern and eastern India. In Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state with more than 240 million people, all but one of the state's 75 districts recorded "large excess" rainfall on Sunday, September 27. Schools were closed on September 28 in parts of the state, including the capital, Lucknow, and rescue teams moved people from flooded areas to safer locations.
A situation report released late on September 27 by the state Relief Commissioner's office put the death toll at 81, with more than 2,200 houses damaged, 154 animals killed in rain-related incidents and 81 hectares of farmland damaged. The Associated Press reported 46 people injured. In Odisha, more than 75,000 people were evacuated to safer areas. Rainfall was expected to ease on September 28 as the weather system weakened, though the Regional Meteorological Centre in Lucknow said light rain could continue in parts of the state through September 29.
