Mindanao Earthquake
Overview
On June 8, 2026, at 7:37 a.m. local time, a powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of southern Mindanao near Sarangani province, with the epicenter located approximately 26 km west-southwest of Kablalan at a depth of 55 km. The quake — the strongest to hit the region in years — caused widespread structural damage across Sarangani, South Cotabato, Davao Occidental, and General Santos City. At least 45 people were killed, more than 630 injured, and 17 remained missing days after the event. A 1-meter tsunami struck nearby coastlines, and a landslide triggered by the quake killed 13 villagers in Sarangani province. More than 32,900 families (145,000+ individuals) were displaced across 163 barangays, with thousands sheltering in evacuation centers. Over 2,000 aftershocks were recorded in the following days. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. immediately ordered all disaster-response agencies to mobilize, while the Philippine Red Cross, UNICEF, and international humanitarian organizations launched emergency relief operations providing medical care, clean water, shelter, and food.
