Overview
In San Juan Alotenango, Guatemala, the Fuego Volcano began a slow eruption in early 2025, spewing ash and lahar (volcanic mudflows) across surrounding neighborhoods. Hundreds of residents were evacuated from regions closest to the volcano, with multiple school and road closures implemented. Authorities warned that tens of thousands more evacuations could be necessary if activity intensified. The volcanic ash contaminated water supplies and destroyed crops, threatening the livelihoods of farming communities. Relief organizations provided respiratory protection, clean water, and evacuation support to affected populations.
