Overview

Cyclone Arnab crossed the Andhra Pradesh–Yanam coast of India between 02:00 and 08:00 IST on October 28, 2026, about 20 km east-northeast of Narsapur, as a very severe cyclonic storm. The India Meteorological Department estimated landfall winds of 125–135 km/h, gusting to 150 km/h, before the system weakened inland.

More than 180,000 people were evacuated across Andhra Pradesh and Odisha before landfall, including over 30,000 in Odisha, where 2,037 shelters were readied, 313 response teams were deployed and schools were closed in 16 districts. As of October 28, three deaths had been reported in Andhra Pradesh, two of them from contact with fallen or exposed live wires.

Rainfall reached about 260 mm in 24 hours at Garividi, with several other Andhra Pradesh locations near 250 mm. Trees and electricity poles were uprooted, power supplies were disrupted, train and flight services were cancelled, and flights were suspended at Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Rajahmundry. The coastal road at Uppada in Kakinada district was washed out. The IMD forecast heavy to very heavy rain over coastal Andhra Pradesh, southern Odisha and southern Chhattisgarh, and 0.5–1 m of residual storm surge in low-lying coastal areas.

The response so far is led by the National Disaster Response Force, state emergency operations centres and the Odisha government. We have not confirmed any of the organizations we track responding as of October 28.
