Overview

On June 27, 2026, eight inches or more of rain fell in just a few hours on parts of Kentucky in the United States, triggering flash flooding that hit Madison County, including the city of Richmond, and Cumberland County especially hard. Rescuers carried out more than 60 water rescues, many of them in Madison County.

Four deaths were reported at first: three in Madison County, including two people in a Richmond basement apartment, and one in a weather-related traffic crash in Jackson County. By July 7, Gov. Andy Beshear reported that the toll had risen to six, with deaths in Hardin and Jefferson counties. Beshear declared a statewide emergency, 26 cities and counties issued their own emergency declarations, and the governor said he would seek a federal disaster declaration for flood-affected counties.
