Editorial StaffNovember 2, 2026 at 12:00 AM

A new cyclone hit eastern India this week, a typhoon that earlier struck Guam moved on to Taiwan and Japan, and the Thailand floods grew to 83 confirmed deaths. Three disasters from earlier in the year were also closed out. Figures are from our disaster pages as of the dates given, and the directory is updated daily.

New This Week

Cyclone Arnab crossed the Andhra Pradesh–Yanam coast of India early on October 28, 2026, as a very severe cyclonic storm, with landfall winds of 125–135 km/h. More than 180,000 people were evacuated across Andhra Pradesh and Odisha before it arrived. At least six people had died as of the latest update, including two who touched fallen or exposed live wires. Rainfall reached about 260 mm in 24 hours at Garividi, power lines were brought down, and flights were suspended at Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Rajahmundry. The response is led by India's National Disaster Response Force and state emergency teams. We have not confirmed any of the organizations we track responding yet, and the page will be updated as that changes.

Ongoing Emergencies

Typhoon Champi passed about 10 miles south of Guam on October 18 as a Category 4 storm, then re-intensified to super typhoon strength and crossed Taiwan on October 22–23. Taiwan's fire department reported one death and 527 injuries as of October 24, and about 1,000 flights were cancelled. Okinawa and Japan's southern islands were hit next, and about 288,000 houses were without power across the affected areas as the storm weakened on October 26. In Guam, World Central Kitchen is serving hot meals in shelters, and FEMA support was authorised by a presidential emergency declaration for the United States territory.

The Thailand Floods now cover 53 provinces, including Bangkok. As of October 26, the death toll was 83, up from 71 two weeks earlier, and cumulative impact reached 2.2 million households, or 6.8 million people, according to the AHA Centre. Water levels were falling everywhere, but flooding continued in 20 provinces and Bangkok, affecting about 1 million people. New heavy rain on October 24–26 also flooded southern provinces including Trang, Satun, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Phuket. Reuters estimated damage at more than US$320 million. See the Thailand page for background.

In Ghana, the Red Cross launched a relief operation for 350 flood-affected households in Ketu South, and the recovery window for the Ghana Floods was extended to January 29, 2027. CARE is also listed as a responder.

Moving to Recovery

Three disasters were closed out this week. The Babylon Fire in Utah was marked resolved on October 26, and the Colorado Wildfires and Assam Floods followed on October 27. Resolved does not mean fully rebuilt: recovery work continues in all three places, and their pages keep the record of who responded.
